Poverty rate on the increase in Northern Ghana

The United Nations Resident Cordinator to Ghana, Ruby Sandhu-Rojon has described as sharp contrast the increasing rate of poverty in the northern part of Ghana to that of the south.

According to her, the largest number of poor people in the country live in the North, Accra and Kumasi, “ and while the number of poor people in the south decline by 2.5 million, in the north it actually increases by nine hundred thousand.”

Ruby Sandhu-Rojon, has therefore hinted that until government takes stringent measures to address poverty among women and children, it will continue to be a major hindrance to the socio-economic development of the country.

Although poverty, malnutrition among others among women and children continue to be a setback to socioeconomic development, Ghana is on track to attaining certain objectives of the Millennium Development Goals. This progress is attributed to the right investment choices, policies and priorities that have been set by government.

Adding her voice, Minister of Women and Children’s Affairs, Juliana Azumah-Mensah, also shared the same opinion with the UN Resident Cordinator, saying that “a large number of our women and children countinue to face extreme poverty, deprivation and violence. As a country we still have a lot of challenges in ensuring that our and children enjoy their full rights as enshrined in the 1992 constitution.”

According to her, the achievement of government would not only be measured by the improvement in the political and economic situation, but by how successful it has been helping women and children, especially the poorest and most vulnerable, to realize their rights
