Musicians walk for World Tolerance Day

As the world marks World Tolerance Day today, the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has joined in the crusade for tolerance and peace in Ghana with a walk on the principal streets of Accra.

The walk, which started early in the morning, got members of the union walking to Parliament to present a petition for the day to be marked in Ghana for the peace the country has enjoyed for the past 50 years.

In a phone interview with e.tv Ghana’s Awake host, Rashida Nasamu, MUSIGA President, Bice Osei Kuffuor (Obour), said it was about time a flag hoisting ceremony is held to celebrate the day as Ghanaians.

He also indicated that the petition contained a proposal for former presidents; Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kuffuor, to sit together on the day with Members of Parliament, political parties executives and other stakeholders who mattered in the democratic governance of the country.

Obour said the proposal is to send across a message to the various party supporters that there is the need for tolerance even within political circles.

He noted that, upon reaching the Parliament House, the union was received warmly by the Speaker of Parliament, Minority and Majority leaders as well as some Members of Parliament.

World Tolerance Day was instituted in 1996 by the UN General Assembly by a resolution 51/95, which invited UN Member States to observe day on November 16 each year.
