Confusion takes over Korle Bu as management falls apart
Ghana’s major referral hospital, the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital seems to be in turmoil as the board which oversees the management and administration of the hospital is fragmented.
Members of the board have been accused of pursuing their personal interests leading to high levels of corruption. A member of the board, Fritz Baffour sums up the ongoing situation at the hospital as “disgraceful.”
At the time e.tv Ghana got to Korle Bu, the office of the director of Administration, Nelson Menorkpor, was under new lock and key to prevent him from leaking any more information to the media since he has been asked to hand over to his deputy.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of Korle Bu, Professor Nii Out Nartey and Board Chairman, Rev Professor Seth Aryeetey, the decision to dismiss the Director of Administration was due to his inability to cover up some deals such as the importation of hospital equipment in the name of Korle Bu for their private clinicsto evade some duties and taxes.
A Board member, Stella Quaye, who went to enquire from the Chief Executive about the current situation at the hospital, was beaten up by Korle Bu security on the orders of the Chief Executive Officer.
Some journalists who also went to follow up on the situation are currently receiving treatment at the hospital after being assaulted by the security – again, on the orders of the Chief Executive.
e.tv Ghana found that during the entire three week strike called by the doctors, the Board Chairman never called a meeting to discuss the way forward for the hospital, but has in the last week alone, called two emergency board meetings to consider the dismissal of the Director of Administration.
Meanwhile, the Chief Security Officer, Jerome Asigri, has been dismissed for failing to adhere to a directive not to search vehicles of certain personalities when they are exiting the hospital after work.
In the light of the confusion the hospital board could be dissolved within the next few days to pave the way for a forensic investigation into allegations of looting and some other malfeasance at the hospital.
