Government to institute quarterly clean up exercises to check flooding in Accra and Tema.
Local Government Minister, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo says government is considering the institution of quarterly clean-up exercises in flood-prone areas of Accra and Tema.
The decision follows the October 26 floods which hit the capital. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo was speaking to journalists over the weekend after personally leading a massive cleanup of Accra and some parts of Tema. The exercise was also to test the capacity of the various sub-metropolitan areas to manage garbage and filth collection in their localities.
The exercise, which started in the morning, involved de-silting of choked gutters and the clearing of rubbish by Zoomlion, some staff of the AMA, market women and residents of the various communities.
Though shops were asked to remain closed till the cleanup was over at noon, many defied the order. Those who defied the order were compelled by AMA boss Alfred Oko Vanderpuije to close their shops till the work was done.
The October 26th torrential rainfall saw many gutters and rivers overflowed their banks killing about nine people and causing damage to property worth millions of cedis.
