Catholic bishops want CSSPS scraped

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has called for the abolishment of the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) due to the associating problems surrounding this year’s placements.

The call was contained in a communiqué issued by the GCBC and signed by Most Rev. Joseph Osei-Bonsu, President of the GCBC, at the end of a five-day Annual Plemary Assembly held in Takoradi. The bishops also called on government to restore the four year Senior High School (SHS) education system which was implemented by the NPP government.

The nine-page communiqué which climaxed the annual plenary assembly held under the theme; “Good Governance for Peace” explained that after years of experimenting with the CSSPS, “we think that the time has come to abolish this system and replace it with a workable alternative”.

It said, seven weeks into the first term, most students were still at home waiting to know which schools to attend, and adding that there appeared to be more corruption, confusion and inefficiency in this system.

It observed that the massive failure at this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the inefficiencies of the CSPS indicates that Government is not listening to the people.

The communiqué asked the government to maintain the four –year system of Senior High for some time to know its full benefits and disadvantages before “we decide whether to make any changes or switch to any other system.

The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference (GCBC) also added its voice to the call for a verification mechanism in the biometric registration for the 2012 general election.

“We urge the government and the Electoral Commission (EC) to procure all the necessary equipment to authenticate the identity of voters in 2012 elections.”

The bishops also called on the EC to educate Ghanaians on the biometric register and its functions. They further called on government, as a matter of urgency, to embark on civic education of the populace to dispel the ignorance, not only about the biometric election system, but also about their rights and obligations as citizen.

The communiqué said largely the peace in the country depended on transparent elections and therefore entreated all political parties and stakeholders to support the EC to deliver its mandate.

The GCBC called for the establishment of a political framework for the efficient management of post election issues and transfer of political power from one administration to another without degenerating into controversies and acrimonies.
