AMA demolishes structures along Circle's main drainage system
The Accra Metropolitan Assemble has embarked on a massive demolition exercise of structures along the main drainage system at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra. The AMA believes the activities of people living along the drainage system are the major cause of flooding in the capital.
Checks made by e.tv Ghana’s Naadi Bitlegma to ascertain the reasons for AMA’s demolition exercise revealed that the main drainage system had suffered years of siltation as a result of the indiscriminate dumping of solid waste.
These activities have reduced the 2.5 metre-depth drainage system to a shallow one, thus making it increasingly difficult for the drainage system to accommodate huge volumes of water whenever there is a heavy downpour.
The exercise, according to the AMA, is meant to save the unfortunate situation. However, victims of the demolition exercise are angry and have accused the Accra Metropolitan Assembly of not giving them prior notice.
