Anti-corruption workshop held in Accra
The Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) has organized a workshop to sensitise players in the private sector on their role in ensuring a corruption-free society to ascertain the basic efforts of business entities in promoting good corporate governance in the private sector.
The workshop aims to bring businesses together to build a self-monitoring mechanism for the promotion of transparent and accountable private sector in the country.
Institutional corruption has been a huge challenge to Ghana’s development efforts as many strategies adopted to deal with it have not achieved the desired results. There is no doubt that many attempts have been made and more are being made to respond to the menace of corruption in Ghana.
The attempts span from Administrative reforms, politically-motivated approaches and pressure from the international community among others.
Institutionally the Police Service, Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) and CHRAJ among others, have been strengthened to augment anti-corruption efforts, but there is still an increasing challenge due to the elimination of a key segment – the Private Sector.
Political Analyst, Kwesi Jonah, is however not pleased that the various anti-corruption initiatives have been highly focused on the Public sector without a corresponding involvement of the Private Sector.
The strategy of involving the Private sector has become even more pressing with recent reports on private companies engaged in corrupt practices.
Notwithstanding the numerous efforts towards the fight against corruption, there is on the perceptive level, no sign that corruption is decreasing in Ghana.
Given the failure of these anti-corruption approaches, there is the need to operationalize a “Business Action against Corruption” where the private sector takes a leading role in developing strategies to address the canker.
