43,087 people displaced after last week's floods

The aftermath of last week’s floods in Accra has left 43,087 people displaced, while the death toll has risen to 14, officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) have said.

Out of the dead, eight were males and off those who were affected, four sustained injuries and the rest had their properties destroyed.

To ameliorate the suffering of those whose properties were destroyed, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) yesterday continued to distribute relief items to the victims in areas such as Adenta, Tema, Ga East, Ga South, Ga West, Osu Klottey, Okaikoi North, Ashiedu Keteke, Ablekuma North and South.The items included blankets, mats, buckets, basins, cups, plates, mosquito nets and clothing.

Speaking at a function at which Vodafone Ghana Foundation made a donation to NADMO, the National Co-ordinator of NADMO, Mr Kofi Portuphy, said the relief items were being distributed in accordance with the number of people in each household after they had registered with the organisation.

The presentation made by the Vodafone Ghana Foundation to NADMO included rice, cooking oil, milk, gari, sugar and soap. On his part, the Director of External Affairs of Vodafone Foundation, Mr Patrick Boateng, said the presentation was to implement the objective of the foundation to respond to emergencies such as what occurred in Accra last week.

He, therefore, urged the general public to contribute through “Red Alert”, an emergency fundraising platform that enables Vodafone customers to make donation by dialling *133 and following voice prompts to make donations.
