Engineers fear worst flood disasters in the near future if...

The Ghana Institution of Engineers (GhIE) has called for a review in governance and city planning in order to avert any unforeseen disasters in the future.

After touring areas affected by last week’s floods, the GhIE warned that the country was likely to face severe disasters in the near future due to the poor manner in which towns are being planned.

Although floods in the country are perennial, especially in the capital, Accra, last week’s floods have been extremely devastating, killing several people and rendering hundreds of people homeless.

The President of the Ghana Institute of Planners, Frank Tackie, attributes the effects of last week’s heavy down pour to poor planning and unplanned rural-urban migration which, he says, if not resolved could have dire consequences on the country in the near future.

Haphazard development, flouting of building regulations and building on waterways have all contributed to compound the situation.

The President of the Ghana Institute of Architects Osei Kwame Agyeman hinted that the absence of a sustainable and integrated plan will lead the nation nowhere.

Last Tuesday’s heavy down pour which lasted about five hours submerged many settlements including Dansoman, Kasoa, Alajo, Kwame Nkrumah Circle and Graphic Road.

Apart from claiming 12 lives, the floods also paralysed parts of Accra, sunk shops and vehicles, as well as washed homes and industrial properties.

Nonetheless, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and some security agencies helped displaced residents to salvage their remaining properties, whilst providing relief items to those who lost everything to the rain waters.
