Striking doctors return to wards in the wake of floods
The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has finally decided to suspend its two week strike with immediate effect as a measure to help deal with the flood situation which has left many homeless and helpless.
Confirming the decision made by the doctors, General Secretary of the GMA Dr. Frank Siribuor in an interview said the decision was informed by the countless appeals by well meaning groups including the Ghana Peace Council, Christian and Moslem groups and civil society groups across the country.
He said considering the many appeals, it was not worth it continuing with the strike and urged all doctors to return to duty as leaders continue negotiations with the Fair Wages and Salary Commission.
He said they also had to return to duty to demystify the notion that they are mass murderers and was hopeful that their grievances would be met whilst they went on their duties.
Dr. Siribuor however lamented what he said were unjustified criticisms against them. Critics most of whom were government spokesperson condemned the strike by the doctors with some calling the leaders of the GMA as mass murderers.
He said those criticisms were misplaced and confirmed that the GMA had met the President on Sunday to discuss the issue.
He was however not ready to divulge the full details of the meeting, except to say that President Mills had counselled them to follow the due process of the law.
