Hours of rainfall leave communities under water
Many communities in Accra have been devastated by flooding following heavy downpours lasting close to five hours overnight.
Affected areas include Dansoman SSNIT flats, Adenta, Kasoa New Market, Dome Pillar 2, Pokuase, Ashaley Botwe, Graphic Road, Kaneshie, Circle and other surrounding communities.
Currently, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and other security and relief agencies are providing relief efforts to the affected communities.
Education Minister, Betty Mould Iddrisu, has also directed school officials in the Accra-Tema metropolis to close down schools in order to ensure that the safety of children is not compromised in their likely struggles to get to school.
Reports reaching e.tv Ghana indicate that the Odaw River along Circle has overflown its banks, making it impossible for motorists to make their way through.
The Mayor of Accra, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, has subsequently called on motorists and residents alike to stay indoors in order for the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to salvage the situation.
