Poor sanitation poses health risk to consumers at Agbogbloshie market

Despite repeated reportage about the sanitation conditions at the Agbogbloshie market in Accra, not much has been done to improve conditions there. Authorities at the market say they are putting in efforts to clear the filth and need the support of government.

A visit to the market by e.tv Ghana reveals that, following the demolition of Makola No.1 market in the early 1980s, a water-logged portion of Agbogbloshie was converted to a market to resettle the displaced Makola traders.

Today Agbogbloshie, is one of Accra’s biggest foodstuff markets. Its location makes it accessible to people in various parts of Accra. Customers prefer to shop here because of cheap prices of foodstuff and other items.

The contamination of food with bacteria makes food poisoning a possibility and some of the vegetables lose their state of freshness and nutritional value as a result of the way they are handled.

Appropriate storage facilities are nonexistent as frozen chicken and meat are displayed in the open at the mercy of flies.

Despite efforts being made by Zoomlion, a private waste management firm, to improve the sanitation conditions at the market, it still remains filthy especially with choked gutters.s making efforts to improve the sanitation conditions here.

The Chief Sanitation Officer at the Agbogbloshie market Nii MacClean has, however, given the assurance that his outfit will clear the filth especially the chocked gutters.

As a flood prone area, the main road leading to the market is rough creating a lot of inconvenience for motorists. Take it or leave it, the Agbogbloshie market remains a preferred destination for most people to buy foodstuff. The sanitation conditions here should therefore be of primary concern to all.
