Ghana needs to invest 1.49 billion in water sector to meet demand by 2020
A study conducted by the Ghana National Water Supply Integrity (GNWSI) shows that an estimated $1.49 billion needs to be invested into the water sector to meet the water supply demand by the year 2020.
The study, which assessed the integrity and performance of the water sector, shows that, the resource inflow into the water supply sector forms 35 per cent of the level required annually.
The report also indicates that improved access to water supply in urban areas in 2006 was 59 per cent while rural communities recorded 53 per cent.
Reports, however, indicate that, Ghana has been able to achieve 78 per cent in attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the water sector.
According to the report, an estimated amount of $811 billion is also needed to fully achieve the MDGs.
Among other things, the report also identified massive corruption in the water supply sector. These include the award of contracts to one contracting firm under different names and the execution of shoddy work by poorly equipped contractors.
Although Ghana has established a comprehensive national water policy, it has not been effectively implemented to address the problems faced in the sector.
The Executive Director of Ghana Integrity initiative Vitus Azeem believes the much effort is needed to reverse the trend.
