GCAA challenged in its quest to ensure air traffic safety
The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) is to strengthen security to ensure greater air traffic safety.
As the country marked World Air Traffic Day, information reaching e.tv Ghana indicated that the GCAA is being faced by serious challenges in its operations.
The International Air Traffic Control Day is a day set aside to recognize the immense contribution of Air Traffic Controllers worldwide. Air traffic controllers are specialised to expedite and maintain a safe and orderly flow of air traffic in the global air traffic control system.
Despite the challenges being faced by the GCAA, Ghana has not recorded an event of air traffic accident in the last year, and this has ranked the Kotoka International Airport as one of the best in the sub-region.
With the vast air space that the GCAA has to manage and control, the authority can only boast of one air traffic controller and limited equipment.
However, efforts are being made by government to fashion out strategies which will delink the air navigation service provider from the regulator.
The move is to give particular attention to the navigation service provider to ensure greater efficiency. Government is also embarking on the construction of new parking bays and resurfacing of the taxiways and runways to improve the aviation industry.
