Food prices likely to surge more as Christmas season approaches
With the Christmas season steadily approaching, many Ghanaians are bracing themselves for a rather difficult time as all indications are that prices of food and goods will rise in the coming weeks. Several indicators including the falling cedi and the increase in import duties will account for the rise and the slow pace of sales for traders.
Christmas is traditionally a bumper season for traders. It is at this time that many Ghanaians throng the major city centres to buy presents and stock up on food for the long holiday season.
Over the past two years many have complained about the high price of goods and services during the Christmas period. This trend looks certain to continue as prices of food and toys rise steadily daily.
For the urban Ghanaian, this development has become part of daily living and most just adapt to the situation in order not to disappoint their children and families. Saving towards Christmas is rare for the ordinary Ghana who lives on less than $3.00 a day.
Some have argued that the rise in prices is because traders know that at all cost, people will buy their goods at Christmas and so they can make more profit by hiking the prices. Others have blamed government for the rise attributing it to the State's inability to stabilize inflation and spending during the period whilst also cashing in on imported goods entering into the country.
With about 66 days to go to Christmas and with the difficult economic situation in the country, is it not time to cut our coats according to our sizes? Can we adapt a strategy where we begin our Christmas shopping long before the season grips us? We may not be able to change things now but certainly, something must give.
