Workshop to review 2011 pro-poor programmes underway in Accra.
Parliament’s Select Committee on Poverty Reduction is meeting in Accra to review government’s pro-poor programmes approved in the 2011 budget to give members a better insight into fresh pro-poor programme proposals for the 2012 budget.
Key persons expected to be present at the meeting include the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly Executives, as well as key ministries, departments and agencies of state.
With technical assistance from the country’s development partners, led by the United Nations Development Programme (NDP), the initiative is to ensure that adequate resources are allocated for pro-poor programmes as a means of attaining the Millennium Developmet Goals (MDGs).
The deliberations are also to ensure that the 2012 budget which is under preparation would define pro-poor and sustainable development programmes to address key issues identified under the Millennium Development Goals. With just three years left for the attainment of the MDGs, the UNDP is, however, impressed with Ghana’s progress so far.
It is expected that the workshop will raise the consciousness of Ministries, Departments and Agencies in the preparation of pro-poor budgeting and reorient budget drafters to make their budgets pro-poor.
