Akropong, Feb. 22, 2012
The Akropong Divisional Police Command have arrested five persons in connection with the gang rape of a student of Benkum Senior High School in the Eastern Region.
The five suspects have been charged with conspiracy and rape, according to the Public Relations Officer of the Domestic and Violence Support Unit of the Police Criminal Investigation Department, DSP Freeman Tettey.
He said in an interview with an Accra-base radio station, Joy FM that the police were still searching for the remaining two.
According to DSP Tettey, the suspects will be arraigned before court at Akropong on Wednesday to be remanded while investigations continue.
The victim (name withheld), is said to have been ambushed and raped by the seven boys last Saturday on the school premises.
According to reports, the girl, a second year student of the school, accompanied a friend to deliver a book to another person who was waiting for her in one of the classrooms and it was then that she was ambushed.
However, she failed to report to the school authorities and it is believed she did so to protect either her interest or the interest of one of the boys who is believed to be her ex-boyfriend.
None the less, the school authorities found out and reported the incident to the police on Tuesday.
