osafo maafoAccra, Feb. 22, 2012

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service yesterday invited former Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Mr Yaw Osafo-Maafo, for interrogations on his alleged role in the GHC51.2 million judgement debt saga.

He is alleged to have cancelled procurement processed on the construction of new stadia for CAN 2008 during his tenure as Minister of Education and Sports.

He was, however allowed to go home after two hours of interrogation.

Mr Osafo-Maafo is the sixth official to be queried on the circumstances leading to the award and subsequent payment of GH¢51.2 million to the beleaguered businessman, Alfred Agbesi Woyome, who is currently standing trial for defrauding the state.

Speaking in an interview on Accra-base radio station, Counsel for Mr Osafo-Maafo, confirmed that his client had been invited to assist with investigations but was not charged for any wrong doing.

According to him, his client who presented relevant documents which would assist the police in conducting their investigations basically justified why he had to cancel the procurement process.

Mr Dame argued that what his client did was not corrupt since he acted properly and within the confines of the law to protect the taxpayer’s purse.

He added that his client was willing and prepared to assist the police further to conduct its investigations.
