AMA to arrest road offenders on N1 Highway

Bush roadAccra, Feb. 22, 2012

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has issued a warning to deal ruthlessly with drivers stop at undesignated spots to pick and drop off passengers on the Mallam-Tetteh Quarshie highway.

So far, five people have reportedly lost their lives since the NI Motorway was commissioned last Friday, with the latest happening on Monday night when a vehicle ran over a man, killing him on the spot.

The accidents have been attributed to indiscipline by motorists, especially, commercial drivers who ply that route.

A statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the AMA, Numo Blafo III, said a combined team of officers from the police Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) and metro guards will patrol the N1 Highway to prevent further deaths on the road.

The statement further cautioned that anyone caught flouting any of the regulations governing the use of the road would be arrested and prosecuted whilst the vehicle would be towed.

The assembly is also cautioning pedestrians who cross the road at unapproved areas and hawkers trading along the corridors of the road to desist from the practise, adding that offenders would be arrested and punished.
