Gov't assures protection of oil and gas territory

oilAccra, Feb. 20, 2012

President John Evans Atta Mills says he will leave no stone unturned in his efforts to develop a credible defense system capable of protecting the oil and gas industry and Ghana’s territorial integrity as a whole.

The African continent since the 1980s has witnessed conflicts and disputes over natural resources. The diamond conflicts in Angola in the 1980s and in Sierra Leone in the 1990s and the recent Niger Delta oil and gas conflicts in Nigeria are few examples of how resources have fuelled conflicts in the continent.

Recently, there were misunderstandings between Ghana and her neighbour, Cote d’Ivoire with the latter making claims to parts of the sea where oil is currently being drilled in the country.

That notwithstanding, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Alhaji Muhammad Mumuni, assured Ghanaians that the Jubilee Oil Field was safe, despite the claim being made by Cote d’ Ivoire to portions of the huge oil wealth.

He said the government was determined to ensure that the national interest and the interest of Ghanaians were not compromised in any way.

To this end, President John Evans Atta Mills also reiterated in his state of the nation’s address to Parliament last week that he would continue to ensure that Ghana’s territorial waters and its oil and gas industry was protected.

According to the President, a lot of acquisition had been made in equipment and hardware for the navy and air force.

“The Ghana Armed Forces, in the last three years, is not in the near-moribund state it used to be before January 2009,” he noted.

President Mills also expressed his satisfaction with ongoing road constructions being carried out by the 48 Engineer Regiment.

“Last year, I made the point that the 48 Engineer Regiment will once again be mainstreamed into the area of road construction and I must say that I am very much impressed with the good job the Regiment is doing thus far,” he said.
