gh policeAccra, Feb. 20, 2012

President John Evans Atta Mills has given his assurance to support all security institutions in the country ahead of the December polls.

According to the President, “Because 2012 is an election year, it goes without saying that our security institutions must be in a state of readiness to ensure peace and calm before, during, and after the elections.”

“The Police, Military and other institutions charged with law enforcement will have the fullest support of Government to act decisively and fairly. Our commitment to ensure the safety of Ghanaians is as strong as ever,” he said.

President Mills made these observations when he delivered his fourth state of the nation address in Parliament last week.

He noted that as part of measures to improving security to ensure a reduction in major crimes such as armed robbery, car snatching, narcotics and murder, over 4,000 police officers had been recruited across the country.

“We have at the same time taken steps to modernize its forensic facilities to assist in crime prevention and detection. A large quantity of vehicles, communication gadgets, bulletproof vests have been provided to boost operational efficiency of the Police,” he noted.

Touching on immigration, President Mills said the Ghana Immigration Service was expected to complete installation of Digital Border Surveillance System at strategically selected Border control points.

“This around-the-clock monitoring equipment seeks to enhance border security especially in the face of new sub-regional threats of religious and ethnic nature,” he said.
