President highlights economic gains in State of the Nation Address

President J.E.A Mills earlier Thursday touched on some key achievements his government has chalked over the last three years in his last State of the Nation address during his first term in office.

Speaking in Parliament to an expectant crowd, President Mills mentioned that the country currently enjoys her highest rate of economic growth ever due to the pragmatic steps taken by his government.

He mentioned that Ghana enjoys a sustained rate of inflation with a rate of 8.55%.

He credited the success of his government over the last three years to the good people of Ghana and mentioned Parliament as a key factor since parliamentarians have served as the watch dog of his government.

President Atta Mills said his government’s achievements has brought about “investor confidence” citing the figures released by the Ghana Investment Promoting Centre which shows an increase in the number of projects registered as an example.

According to the President, the GIPC released figures which indicate that projects registered amounts to over 7 billion US dollars in direct foreign investment.

According to the president, his government’s achievement is evident in all sectors of the economy.

He took time to highlight some gains in the area of agriculture, health, sports, road,oil production among others to confirm his claim.

According to him more than one million tonnes of cocoa was produced in 2011.

A little over 444 million Ghana cedis was accrued from oil production in 2011 out of the four liftings of three million barrels of crude oil.

He pleaded for a peaceful election and expressed gratitude to the political parties that are ensuring that a peaceful election is experienced in December 2012.

He again promised that his government will hold in check any individual who intend to hold the country to ransom through corrupt practices.

The state address is a constitutional provision (Article 67), which requires the president to give an address at the beginning of each session of parliament.
