Accra, Feb. 15, 2012
President John Evans Atta Mills has inaugurated the N1 Highway MiDA project, stretching from the Tetteh-Quarshie interchange to Mallam Junction in Accra.
The N1 Highway, christened George Walker Bush Highway, according to President Mills derived its name from the former US President, George Bush, because he initiated the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA).
The14-kilometer road project was initiated by ex-President Kufuor’s administration at a cost of $55.7 million.
Inaugurating the project, President Mills acknowledged the role played by ex-President’s Kufuor’s role in securing funding from the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) of the USA.
He lauded the MCA Program saying it “is a dividend for good governance, continued investment in the people and the deepening of economic empowerment.”
President Mills assured all and sundry that “the momentum, which our road development agenda has gathered will continue.”
“We pledged to invest heavily in expanding infrastructure, and it is manifestly clear that we are holding on to that pledge.”
President Mills also took the opportunity to appeal for support from Road Agencies and City Authorities to preserve the quality of the road.
The 14-km road project was undertaken in two lots. Lot One involved the construction of a three-lane dual carriageway from the Tetteh-Quarshie Interchange to the Apenkwa Interchange, covering 5.53 km, while Lot Two involved the upgrading of the highway from the Apenkwa Junction to the Mallam Junction, including the upgrading of the existing two-lane carriageway into a three-lane dual carriageway with wide shoulders, a footpath, a bicycle lane and a median.
Wednesday's impressive ceremony was graced by former President John Agyekum Kufuor, current ministers of state, ministers of the Kufuor administration, traditional rulers, members of the Diplomatic Corps and the general public.
Also present were Mr. Daniel Yohannes, the CEO of the MCC and Mr Alan Patricof, a member of the MCC’S Board of Directors.
