Ghana's qualification for MCA compact 2 not guaranteed

MCC bossAccra, Feb. 15, 2012

Chief Executive Officer of the Millennium Challenge Coroporation (MCC), Daniel Yohannes, has hinted that there is no guarantee that another half a billion dollar cheque will be made available to Ghana anytime soon although she has qualified for another tranche of the funding.

The first compact of $547 million over a six-year period was exhausted on several infrastructure projects including 247 school blocks around the country, two ferries to facilitate transportation on the Volta Lake and the 14-kilometer N1 Highway which was commissioned today.

Funding from the second compact is targeted at the energy sector but Mr Yohannes says any new MCC funding if confirmed is unlikely to be immediate.

Mr Yohannes who is in the country to handover the first compact’s projects to government says maintenance of the completed projects is very important.

He said the MCC was hopeful the government of Ghana will make the necessary policy reforms to ensure that the projects are maintained “for a very long time.”
