Disabled Federation threaten to stop N1 Highway commissioning

Accra, Feb. 15, 2012
The Ghana Federation of the Disabled have threatened to ignore all laws and jump onto the streets to demonstrate their anger against the unfriendly nature of the NI highway due to be commissioned today.
The federation is claiming that the roads are not user friendly to persons living with disability and are therefore, seeking a court injunction to stop the commissioning.
However, officials of the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) say they will go ahead with its planned commissioning of the N1 highway.
President John Evans Atta Mills is expected to commission the project with representatives of the United Sates government which funded the project under the Millennium Challenge Compact.
Speaking on an Accra-based radio station, Joy Fm, Vice President of the Federation, Yaw Ofori Debrah, said he wants President Mills to boycott the ceremony.
He appealed to the President to commission the highway tomorrow (Thursday) in view of the fact that it has not met equal provisions for persons with disability as enshrined in Article 29 of the 1992 Constitution.
“But if they go ahead, we can also ignore all laws jump onto the streets and demonstrate our anger,” he added.
However, Communications Manager for MiDA, Major Don Chebe, says the ceremony will go ahead as planned.
“Nothing has been served on us, as you are aware if we have not received service, obviously we will continue with whatever plans we have made.”
He stated that the Authority had made contacts with the Federation to reassure them that the road has a defect liability period running into 12 months.
Major Don Chebe further explained that “when the road is used and we find out that there are certain difficulties or challenges we can always come back and make certain changes to ensure that the road is user friendly for all persons.”
