Science museum construction comes to a halt
Construction Works at the ultra-modern Museum of Science and Technology (MST) building has come to a halt due to lack of funds.
The brain child of Alan M. May and Wright, then lecturers at the University of Ghana, Legon, the MST was established in August 1965 to preserve the cultural heritage and the monumental achievements in science and technology of the country.
The project which was estimated to cost GH¢52.10 when it was initiated in 1974, now requires thousands of Ghana cedis to complete.
The museum was established to supplement science education at the basic level, where children would have a hands-on experience of what they had been taught in their classrooms. It was also to serve as a platform for stakeholders, researchers, industrialists and the public to share ideas on scientific and industrial applications.
In spite of the enormous potential it holds for the growth of the economy, the edifice has been reduced to a den for criminals. The museum which is almost 80 per cent has portions of it decaying.
Principal Curator of the museum, Mr Agyiri Sackey, said in an interview with e.tv Ghana news that officials of the museum annually submit budgets needed for the completion of the edifice but all to no effect.
He, therefore, made an appeal to government for immediate support to secure the facility.
Currently, due to the uncompleted state of the museum, the artefacts and monuments are being housed in the old building which was built in 1963.
