Lack of logistics hindering police operations
Accra, Feb. 14, 2012
Logistical Challenges faced by the Ghana police service is hindering it from performing effectively.
Even though personnel of the service are willing to sacrifice their lives to protect the country, they are left to do this without the necessary logistics leading to their needless deaths.
Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, ASP Cephas Arthur, in an interview with e.tv Ghana news said the service is giving off its best despite the constraints being faced.
He admitted that the service could do better if the needed logistics such as purpose built vehicles were made available to them.
Over the weekend, a police officer was killed while three other colleagues sustained injuries when they were engaged in an open fire exchange with armed robbers at Weija.
Reports indicated that the police officers were without bullet proof vests when they had to trail the heavily armed robbers.
However, ASP Cephas Arthur explained that majority of the police officers had been provided with vest but other factors such as wearing of the appropriate working gear and professional conduct whilst on operation come to play in the performance of duties.
In another development, the British High Commission has presented some forensic kits at the tune of 1,000 pounds to the renovated police science laboratory.
The equipment will aid the smooth investigation and chain of custody of forensic exhibits at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
Head of CID, Prosper Kwame Agblor expressed his appreciation to the British High Commission saying that the forensic kits would go a long way to help the unit in handling exhibits.
