Workshop on peace underway in Accra
Accra. Feb.10, 2012
A three-day workshop on peace dividends and the road to recovery is underway in Accra. The workshop aims at taking stock of all instances of elections, security and governance in West Africa and how to consolidate gains.
The nature and quality of elections in Africa is said to have improved as Ghana in particular has always been a continental pace-setter in elections. Expectations of international bodies on the upcoming general elections are therefore very high.
President of ECOWAS, James Victor Gbeho, in an interview with e.tv Ghana news said, biometric elections by definition are almost 100 percent accurate and therefore, there is the need to ensure that personnel in charge of the process were incorruptible, and have the capability to operate the system. He warned Ghana against the use of corruptible people to manage its biometric registration systems for the forthcoming elections.
He said, “We should all remember that the whole world’s eyes are on Ghana, therefore, we should try to eschew some of the bad habits of 20 years ago to deliver free, fair, transparent and credible elections.”
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni at the workshop said Ghana has set a standard that needs to be maintained. He underscored the role of peace in addressing issues of poverty and pledged government commitment in ensuring that this year’s election is free and fair.
“Across the world, people are expecting that Ghana will come out and demonstrate once more that we are the beacon of African democracy and therefore we do not want to leave anything to chance,” he noted.
It is worthy to note that to achieve the best for Africa as far as election is concerned, the Kofi Annan Peace Keeping Training Centre is leading efforts to promote peaceful elections on the continent.
