NYEP trains youth in aquaculture

fishThe National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) has aadded another module; Youth in Aquaculture module, to its fleet of programmes.
The Youth in Aquaculture module is among measures being taken by government to tackle Ghana’s fish supply deficit.

The country’s demand for fish is increasing as more Ghanaians have gained consciousness about the dangers of consuming fat-filled meat products.

Nearly 900 metric tons of fish is needed each week to meet the fishery needs of the country.

However, only 420 metric tons are produced, leaving a deficit of nearly 500 metric tons.

The situation which is not all gloomy has led to the training of unemployed youth who have developed the interest in fish farming.

Speaking at a training session in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region, National Coordinator of the Youth in Aquaculture module, Mr Francis Gao, noted that commercial fish farming as a major farming activity is a recent development which has opened up avenues of employment for the youth in the country.

However, he noted that the sector lacks the capacity to provide inputs such as quality fingerlings, fish feed, affordable and durable materials for cage construction and the technical know-how to support the development of the industry.

He believes support from government would make the sector more attractive as the programme is extended to five other regions of the country.

When fully operational, the aquaculture module is expected to help produce above the required 900 metric tonnes and create the possibility of fish exports from Ghana.
