Zoil and Transport Ministry train more lifeguards

An additional three hundred life guards have been trained to improve safety on the Volta Lake. The training forms part of government’s measures to increase safety on the lake. The Volta Lake has for some time claimed the lives of many, the worst being the 35 lives lost in September 2011.

Various factors contributed have to the disaster including dilapidated boats. But the impact of the disaster could have been reduced if help came in handy.

It’s against this backdrop that the Volta Lake Transport Enhancement project (VLTEP) came into force.

The Project involves the training and positioning of lifeguards at strategic points along the Volta Lake.

The training is a collaboration between the Transport Ministry and ZOIL Services Limited, a subsidiary of Zoomlion Company Limited.

The graduates, who were made up of 31 Boat Operators and 107 Life Guards undertook a two-week intensive course in boat work, survival at sea, lifesaving communication, first aid, fire fighting, physical training and drill.

They were drawn from the Volta, Eastern, Northern, Brong Ahafo, Greater Accra and Western regions where the Volta Lake provides means of transport to a number of communities.

So far, 1,300 lifeguards have been recruited, trained by the Navy and deployed to execute their mandate at their respective bases.
