Trades Unions to protest fuel subsidy removal

The Ghana Trades Union Congress has restated its position on the removal of fuel subsidies by government.

Before the close of 2011, government removed its subsidies on petroleum products as a measure to recover full cost for its crude oil imports for domestic use.

The action by government has led to an outcry by civic and social groups including the Alliance for Accountable Government (AFAG) and the GTUC.

The claim government’s decision has brought untold hardships on the ordinary Ghanaian worker.

At a press conference in Accra, the GTUC restated its stance to embark on a demonstration to draw to the attention of government the plight of the Ghanaian worker and to pressurize government in bringing back the subsidies.

The leadership of the labour movement said its attempts to dialogue and hold consultations with government has failed to yield positive results.

According to the Secretary General of the GTUC, Mr Kofi Asmamoah noted that the union’s meeting with the government’s Economic Management Team and another with the Vice-President, John Dramani Maham, were not impressive.

He said in view of the current development, the Steering Committee of the GTUC decided at emergency meetings that come Tuesday, February 7, 2012, all labour councils of the GTUC will hold meetings to plan further actions in the form of a nationwide demonstration.
