Tension mounts among fisher folks of Kpasa

Tension is highly mounting between fisher folks from Kpasa district in the Volta region who are using unauthorized fishing methods against the displeasure of their fellow fisher folks from Kpandai and Bladjai in the Kpandai District of the Volta region.

Residents of Kpasa district are accusing natives of Kpandai and Bladjai of attacking and beating some fisher folks in the area for using the method locally known as “atidja” to fish on the river Oti.

They have taken offence by the act they and are preparing for a revenge if authorities fail to bring their attackers to book. A quick intervention by authorities is expected before it escalates.

The “atidja’ method of fishing, is a way trapping fishes in the river with the use of woods. The woods are dropped into the river to create conducive hiding place for the fish and then fishermen trap them with their nets.

The effects however are a fast deforestation of the area and the contamination of the river body among others.

In a telephone interview, the District Chief Executive DCE for Kpandai, Jasper Jatoh Moagi, maintains that the practice is affecting the fishing community. He gave the assurance that he would that the practice is stopped peacefully.
