CPP opens flagbearer nominations

After the resignation of the 2008 presidential candidate of the Convention People’s Party, Dr Paa Kwasi Nduom, the party has opened nominations for its National Delegates Conference to elect a presidential candidate. The conference is scheduled for March this year.

Presidential hopefuls are expected to pay 20,000 Ghana cedis as filing fee and an additional 500 Ghana cedis to buy the forms.

Director of Communications of the CPP, Nii Armah Akomfrah, who confirmed this to an Accra-based radio station said the party will be holding all presidential aspirants to a strict set of standards.

He dismissed assertions the filing was too expensive, explaining the party has to raise enough funds to run the affairs of the party and to campaign in the next elections.

He also played down on Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom’s exit from the party, stating the new presidential aspirants will be subjected to strict adherence to the Nkrumaist principles.

Already, Emmanuel Akwetey, a legal practitioner has declared his intention to run for president on the ticket of the CPP.

Asked how he will be able raise funds to purchase the forms and the filing fee, Mr. Akwetey noted he will, when the time comes.

He said he will offer a more pragmatic leadership when elected at the flagbearer.

Meanwhile, pollster Ben Ephson maintains the CPP must target a 3-4 per cent of the total votes and push the elections into a run-off. He is convinced the CPP can only make meaningful impact in the 2016 elections.
