Minority want independent probe into Woyome debt payment

Minority MPs are questioning the appropriateness of the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) investigating circumstances leading to the release of 58 million Ghana cedis to NDC financier Alfred Woyome.

The probe was ordered by President Mills following widespread anger over the payment of the huge judgment debt to Mr. Woyome.

Minority leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, speaking in parliament yesterday, demanded that the matter be de-politicized to enable the ordinary Ghanaian appreciate the seriousness of government losing as much as 58 million cedis.

The Minority believes the dismissal of the then Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Betty Mould Iddrisu, as a cabinet Minister is key in unraveling the reasons why the state showed no interest in contesting the case.

The judgment debt paid to Mr. Woyome is the “single largest loss” to Ghana since independence. He had won a case brought against the government for breaches in the procurement act in the award of contracts for the construction of stadia for the African Cup of Nations held in Ghana in 2008.

The NPP is calling for a truly independent inquiry like the Ghana at 50 probes to cleanse the soul of the nation and appease its spirit.
