I may rerun for president-Akwasi Amoafo Yeboah
2008 independent presidential candidate, Akwesi Amoafo Yeboah, has said that he has not made up his mind whether or not to contest the presidential slot in the upcoming 2012 general elections.
Akwesi Amoafo Yeboah, a business entrepreneur polled 19,342 votes (0.23%) during the 2008 elections and has since been silent.
When asked by e.tv Ghana’s Awake host, Rashida Nasamu, about his whereabouts over the last four years, he responded, “I’ve been around; it’s just that people have not been looking for me.”
He added that he has not decided whether or not to take part in the upcoming elections, noting that “as I’m concerned there is still a lot of time and I have my options open until I decide I’m not going forward.”
Akwesi Amoafo Yeboah described next year’s elections as very critical “and if the right person is not elected, then I’m sorry, the next generation is going to cry.”
He noted that, unfortunately in Ghana, politics has been viewed as a football game “without Ghanaians realizing that the decision we are making is going to inform our future.”
He dismissed claims that he was forming an alliance with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and explained that, as an independent candidate, it would be impossible for him to do so.
However, he acknowledged the progress being made by the NDC government in certain key areas. “We’ve made some progress when it comes to crime, corruption and narcotics. But as a growing nation it is going to be difficult wiping these things out completely.”
The 2008 independent presidential candidate also admitted that his independent candidature contributed to his low vote turn out, adding that, “as time goes on it’s going to change since we are bringing up a new generation of independent minded people.”
Mr Akwesi Amoafo-Yeboah holds an electrical engineering degree from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). He worked as an engineer at Obuasi Gold Mines and is currently the West African Director of Vital Sources Limited, a mining equipment supplier company.
