Assumption of backbencher role in CPP may be catastrophic
A political analyst at the University of Ghana, Legon, Ransford Gyampo, has described the backbencher role being assumed by the Convention People’s Party’s (CPP) 2008 flagbearer, Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom as catastrophic.
He said “Let’s not lose sight of the fact that some backbenchers may play very serious and dangerous roles in political parties. They may not talk and so you may not hear them and so you may not be able to appreciate the extent to which their activities are either undermining or promoting the interest of the party.”
In an interview with e.tv Ghana, Mr Gyampo said “ I think the CPP needs all on board to be able to assist their new elected executives to work and strengthen the party. And I think it will be catastrophic for the party if Ndoum’s backbencher role becomes an indication of his preparation to exit the party or not to put himself up for any elective position.”
It is widely believed that Dr. Nduom is the most popular CPP person in the country who stands the chance of putting on a good wheel but is advised that his over ambition may be the cause of his problems in the party.
“It looks as if his ambition or over ambition threatens others and that is why some school of thought believes that what is going on is being orchestrated to push him away. But I think a house divided against its self cannot stand. So if the party believes in playing any crucial role in the upcoming elections, I think they will have to put their house in order,” My Gyampo noted.
CPP’S Paa Kwesi Nduom announced his intention to assume a back bench role in the party on Tuesday in a move aimed at avoiding criticism from party leadership over his delays in electing a flagbearer for the 2012 elections.
In order to create a level playing field for all presidential aspirants in the party he says he will also stop all campaigns and regular activities with the regional and constituency executives of the CPP.
Many meanings are however being read into his new stance. Some think assuming a back bench role gives an indication that Dr. Nduom may be preparing to exit the CPP or may not put himself up for the presidential race at all.
However, spokesperson for the Youth for Nduom 2012 Exploratory Committee, Richard Nii Armah thinks otherwise.
According to him, the words of the National Chairperson, Samia Nkrumah, that millions of people were waiting for the exit of Dr Nduom in order to join the party was the best.
He says, “We are also interested in the millions because we want them to come on board to come make the party better. So if by not actively participating will make people join the party then I think it is good.”
