Entrust media fund to GJA and NMC- Nana Akomea
Member of Parliament for Okaikwei South, Nana Akomea, is demanding that the one million Ghana cedis provided for the upgrade of the Ghanaian media in the 2012 budget statement be given to the Ghana Journalist Association and the National Media Commission to manage. Anything short of this he says would be dangerous.
The MP was contributing to the debate on the 2012 budget statement and financial policy of the government on the floor of Parliament. His worry is that setting up any committee for the management of the fund may divert the original idea behind the institution of the fund.
“My conclusion is on the media fund which for me is commendable. I will urge the government to place the implementation of this funding into the hands of the Ghana Journalists Association and the Media Commission. So that there will be broad multi-partisan support for this fund. This intention of appointing some trustee body will not garner the necessary confidence to be able to administer this fund properly,” he said.
The 2012 budget allocates an amount of one million Ghana cedis for media development in the country. This sets a stage for the Ghanaian media to improve their performance.
