Tano North MP wants cocoa farmers monies refunded

NPP Member of Parliament for Tano North, Ernest Akobuor Debrah has described as unfair the inability of government to implement the cocoa farmers housing and pension scheme.

He said the implementation of the schemes were long over due since its introduction by government three years ago.

He has therefore called for government to refund the monies taken from the farmers for the formulation of the policy.

The MP was reacting to a statement made on the floor of parliament by the MP for Moin, Alhassan Ahmed Yakubu who praised government for its immense contribution towards the agriculture sector.

The NDC MP for Moin on his part said government in its efforts to spur agriculture had put in measures to avoid the reliance on rain fed agriculture.

“That is why this government has decided to have a spine and rely and develop projects and programmes that can raise the proportion of agriculture such that its growth can be more stable than we have always witnessed,” he said.

The majority, have however, praised the 2012 budget statement for ensuring continuity of remarkable projects in irrigation, commercial agriculture, fisheries, livestock, fertilizer subsidy, SADA and youth development in Agriculture said it should motivate their colleagues on the other side to support its approval.

But Minority MPs are livid that such impressive proposals are not backed by its commitment to allocating funds and other resources for execution.
