The state of the nation is precarious - PPP
Accra, Feb. 17, 2012
The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has described President John Evans Atta Mills’ fourth State of the Nation Address to parliament as precarious.
According to them, the President’s perception of the state does not reflect the real situation of what is happening in the country.
“At best, the Ghanaian economy is facing serious threat. President Mills is leaving this nation more divided than it used to be and we expected him to have addressed that,” a statement signed by the Party’s Secretary, Kofi Siaw-Asamoah, said.
“The country is divided badly among ethnic and political lines and this is dangerous for our dear nation. Our healthcare delivery system deteriorated; there is a high level of graduate unemployment, a poor educational system is what our children have experienced and there is the threat of violence everywhere.”
The statement further said the President did not render an account of his stewardship, rather, “he rather went there to deliver a campaign speech.”
According to the statement, the President’s address did not contain factual pictures of what existed in the country.
“For instance, the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) has been proven not to be Free and Compulsory as we were made to believe. It is sad to recall that the 2011 BECE results were the worst in 13 years with many schools scoring zero percent passes,” it said.
The statement also said the party expected the President to deal with matters which were affecting the “instead of turning Parliament into a campaign ground.”
PPP is, however, of the hope that the implementation of the recommendations made by the Constitutional Review Commission will be treated with a sense of urgency.
