Hassan Ayariga wins PNC presidential nomination

Mr Hassan Ayariga was over the weekend elected by the national delegates congress of the People’s National Convention (PNC) as the new flagbearer of the party for the 2012 presidential election.

The 39 year-old business man polled 486 votes Dr Edward Nasigre Mahama, a five-time presidential candidate of the PNC. He obtained 426 votes.

The election which was characterised by organisational challenges was conducted by the EC on the Sunyani Polytechnic campus in the Brong Ahafo Region.

The occasion was also used to re-elect Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan as the Leaser and Chairman of the party, Mr Bernard Mornah as the party’s General Secretary and Madam Hajia Hajara Ali, who run unopposed as the First National Vice Chairperson of the party.

Mr Emmanuel Wilson Jnr was elected as the National Organiser whilst former MP for Bolgatanga, Mr David Apasera was elected as Treasurer of the party.

The race for the position of National Youth Organiser and National Women’s Organiser went to Mr Abu Ramadan and Ms Janet Asana Nabla respectively.

Also present at the congress was the Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Ms Samia Nkrumah. She was accompanied by the party’s General Secretary, Mr Ivor Greenstreet, former National Youth Organiser, Mr Kwabena Bomfeh (Kabila) and a leading member of the CPP, Prof Agyeman Badu Akosah.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Asomah Cheremeh; the National Youth Organiser of the NPP, Mr Anthony Abeifa Karbo, and the First National Vice-Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Huudu Yahaya, were also there to offer their respective solidarity messages.

The Chairman for the congress, Dr Sulley Gariba, in his post-congress remarks, pointed out that the successful congress in Sunyani was victory for democracy in the party, not for any single individual.

The four-time presidential candidate of the PNC, Dr Mahama, said he was proud to have led the party for the past 16 years, adding that the activities of the PNC had never been a “one-man show’’, as was being peddled.

He expressed optimism that the newly elected flag bearer would be able to accomplish whatever he could not achieve during his tenure of office.

For his part, Mr Ayariga indicated that the victory that he chalked up was personal but for all members of the party, saying, however, that for the first time in the history of the party a young person had been elected as flag bearer and so it signified a new dimension for the PNC.

Mr Ayariga paid glowing tribute to the former presidential candidate and promised to chart a better path in the upcoming election, adding that the NDC and the NPP ought to sit up for a stiff challenge.
