Awake feasts with lepers on World Leprosy Day

The production team of e.tv Ghana’s flagship programme, Awake, on Sunday feasted with inmates of the Weija Leprosarium.

The event which was held to commemorate World leprosy Day forms part of its community service project launched nearly two years ago.

World Leprosy day is held on the last Sunday of each year. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Transformation”.

The Weija Leprosarium was established on August 14, 1950 to cater for the welfare of cured lepers in the country. In Ghana, other leprosaria can be located in Ho, Cape Coast, Kumasi, and Nkanchina.

The Weija Leprosarium is currently home to about 32 cured lepers. However, they remain in the leprosarium due to discrimination and neglect.

Nationally, about 500 lepers are still stigmatised against, leaving them with places to call home.

Awake host, Rashida Nasamu, who led the team to feast the cured lepers on Sunday, said they were touched by the plight of the inmates. The team presented the inmates with assorted foods, drinks and pastries.

The inmates are displeased by the feeding grant given to them by government.  It is pegged at 26p. That’s just about how much you need to buy chewing gum or two sachets of water – it doesn’t even buy one ball of Kenkey.

One of the inmates, Naa Chiokor, told the team that all she needs is money to buy food and not clothes.

Head of the Lepers Aid Committee, Father Campbell expressed displeasure at the meager feeding grants and wants government to increase it. He was also appreciative of e.tv Ghana’s efforts.
