Technology taking over traditional Christmas cards

It’s just six days to Christmas and 20 years ago a period like this was always filled with card exchanges, many of them through the post.

Today the practice has withered – thanks to the abundance of technology such as mobile phones and computers. But to what extent has this changed the way Christmas is celebrated.

Christmas is one of the most important and joyous festivals among Christians lasting many days. It is arguably the busiest period of the year. Believers and non-believers alike celebrate in different fashions. But for most people, it’s a time for friends and relatives to visit each other regardless of religious beliefs.

Shops, schools and even cars are brightly decorated with Christmas themes. During this period, Christmas cards and gifts are exchanged and sometimes a feast is usually held.

But as e.tv Ghana news finds out, the patronage of Christmas Cards is rather on the decline perhaps due to the advancement of technology. E-mails, text messages and phone calls are gradually taking over the good old days of sending Christmas cards to friends and loved ones.

Traders who sell Christmas cards, stationery and gift items in the Central Business District of Accra, say patronage of Christmas cardsis very poor this year because most of the people use the internet in communicating to their loved ones and no longer need cards or flowers as gifts.

Corporate organizations, however, have stuck to the practice of exchanging Christmas cards to express their well wishes.

One symbol of Christmas that has however stood the test of time is the famous Christmas tree. The tree is loved and cherished by all and sundry and decorating it with ornaments, candy canes and lights enhances the general look of the tree.

Traders who spoke to e.tv Ghana news say they are recording a boom in the sale of the tree.

So to really obtain the correct spirit of Christmas, you really need to think about buying a Christmas tree.
