Golden Christmas tree goes on display in Tokyo

A $2-million dollar Christmas tree made out of pure gold has gone on display in Tokyo for the holiday season.

Twelve kilograms of pure gold went into the making of the lavish tree, which is currently on display at Tokyo’s Ginza Tanaka jewellery store.

The company paired up with flower arrangement artist, Shogo Kariyazaki, for the Golden Christmas Tree which stands 2.4 meters (8 feet) tall and is adorned with ribbons, hearts and flowers.

Based on gold's current market value, the tree is worth approximately US$700,000 however Ginza Tanaka's marketing manager, Naoto Mizuki, says that the actual value of the tree is much higher. He estimates the price of the gold Christmas tree to be in the region of US$2,000,000.

The tree will be on display at the store until December 25th.
