Muammar Gaddafi killed

Ousted Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi has been killed after an assault on his home town of Sirte. He died of several gunshot wounds in a battle with fierce rebel forces.

Amateur video obtained by Reuters from National Transitional Council (NTC) fighters in Sirte showed the former Libyan leader covered in blood and held on the ground by NTC fighters in Sirte.

Gaddafi was reportedly killed as Libya's new leaders declared they had overrun the last bastion of his long rule, sparking wild celebrations that eight months of war may finally be over.

His death brings to an end a long battle launched by NATO and opposition forces to outlaw Gaddafi’s regime which had been in charge of Libya for more than 40 years. Just a day before the death of Gadaffi, US secretary of State was in Tripoli to cement America’s new relationship with Libya’s new rulers – the National Transitional Council.

Hundreds of Libyans, have, reportedly poured onto the streets of Libya’s capital, Tripoli to celebrate the death of the ousted dictator.

An NTC official told Reuters that Gaddafi had died of his wounds after the battle, but there was yet to be any independent confirmation. Sirte was one of the last bastions of forces loyal to the former President.
