Hit-and-run video sparks international outrage
Anger continues in China over a hit and run incident involving a two-year old girl who was run over by two trucks.
Eyewitnesses at the scene failed to come to the aid of the girl after she was run over by the first truck, and later by another which further crushed her little body.
A closed circuit camera captured the incident which has provoked anger after a local TV station aired the footage.
The video shows a truck knocking down, stopping briefly and rolling over a toddler in a busy market in southern China.
What follows is perhaps more disturbing, as at least a dozen passers-by who did nothing to help until a second truck further crushed the girl.
Finally, a woman stops to help, dragging her to safety. Her mother, a migrant worker, then rushes to her daughter's side. The girl has been declared brain dead by hospital officials.
The video, first aired by a local TV station, has sparked public outrage in China and beyond with citizens criticizing the lack of morality in the Chinese society. During a phone interview with one of the drivers, a reporter asks if he was aware he had run someone over... his reply, "Yes. I only need to pay $1,500 if she dies but if she lives, it would cost ten times more at least".
The father of the girl says one of the drivers has offered him cash to keep his mouth shut on the matter. Many people in China say they are hesitant to help others in distress. There have been several high-profile law suits in China; in which good Samaritans have been ordered to pay hefty fines to individuals they sought to help.
