Children killed in West Bank School bus crash

sch accidentPalestine, Feb. 16, 2012

At least eight Palestinian children have been killed in a collision between their school bus and a truck in the West Bank.

More than 40 people are reported to have been hurt in the crash which happened on one of the main roads between Jerusalem and Ramallah.

The school vehicle overturned in the accident and caught fire. Several of the children who were hurt are said to have suffered serious burns.

The bus was carrying the children from the Shaufat refugee camp near Jerusalem on a field trip to the West Bank city.

Some of those who died are said to be as young as five.

Pictures show the mangled wreckage of the bus on its side as Palestinian and Israeli ambulance crews work together to try to rescue the injured.

Danny Rotenburg, a spokesman for the Israeli ambulance service Magen David Adom, said it appeared to have been a head-on crash.

The cause of the collision, near a main junction, is being investigated but police said bad weather and heavy rain may have played a part.

The driver of the truck, an Arab Israeli citizen, sustained minor injuries.

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas has declared three days of national mourning.
