New strand of drug resistant HIV/AIDS virus discovered

A new strand of HIV virus which is highly resistant to anti-retroviral drugs has been discovered.

The Anti Retroviral drug that keeps the virus in check in people living with the virus has proved to be ineffective against the HIV/AIDS virus.

As the world marks world AIDS day, e.tv Ghana’s Naadi Bitlegma took a look into the emerging trends in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

The new strand which is yet to be named is striking back against the antiretroviral drugs that keep it largely in check. The drug-resistant strands of HIV have already been documented in some parts of the world and recently recorded in Cameroon.

As access to antiretroviral therapy is becoming increasingly difficult for people living with the disease, the emerging trend is a source of worry to health experts.

The disease is a major health problem in many parts of the world, and is considered a pandemic. The HIV/AIDS virus has proved to be a tough nut to crack in medical cycles because of peculiar nature of the virus.

According to the 2011 UNAIDS report, Ghana is among the five countries in the sub region which has had twenty five percent reduction in HIV among young people. But there are still sixty two thousand people living with the disease in the country and facing the problem of access to Anti retroviral drug.

After thirty years of global fight against HIV/AIDS the world’s attention is now focusing on getting a zero percent transmission rate of the disease as World Aids Day is marked.
