Is the EC prepared for next year's elections?
With barely a year to go to the polls, concerns have been raised about the seeming unpreparedness of the country towards this exercise.
The Electoral Commission which has the responsibility to organize the elections has shown little in this regard.
Many have questioned the ability of the EC to successfully compile a biometric electoral roll in six months.
The EC has over the last few months been in the limelight with criticisms from all angles regarding the success of the biometric registration and verification system yet to be introduced for the 2012 elections.
While many believe that the electoral commission should have started a long time ago considering the intensity of the process and the fact that much education needs to be done, others feel that once the EC gets the process going things will work out.
Information flow from the EC itself has been scanty. However, a look at its activities gives a clear indication that it may open for registration early next year.
But whether that is reliable or not remains a secret. The EC is unwilling to comment on its activities but is assuring that it will soon announce its intention.
Experts like Mr. Kojo Pumpuni Asante, Head of Programmes at the Centre for Democratic Development, think that the EC is seriously lagging behind
The biometric process is crucial in making the 2012 election transparent and acceptable. Anything short of efficiency in its execution will spell doom for the country. But whether the biometric system will even see the light of day will depend on the ability of the EC to pick itself up and expeditiously begin preparations.
