Chairman of Kumasi based Neoplan Stars, Jonathan Abbey Pobee, says Black Stars coach, Goran Stevanovic, should step aside for another manager to take up his job if he can’t stay in the country to monitor the local league in order to spot talent.
Speaking on Happy FM’s Sports morning show, the football administrator said it is unfortunate that the coach is given all the support and incentives he needs yet he fails to stay in the country to spot talent. Making his comments as a result of the Black Stars’ failure to reach the final of the AFCON 2012 tournament, Abbey Pobee said if the coach can’t stay in the country then it will be prudent that the country finds another person to replace him.
“When he was appointed, some of us said he should be made to stay in the country. We should have a program for him to follow in assessing the various teams in the local league. The coach should be made to visit all the sixteen clubs…if he can stay in the country to monitor I don’t have a problem but if he doesn’t stay then we should find another coach. The next coach though should be made to sign an agreement that will make him stay in the country to monitor the league,” he said.
On the game played against Zambia, he said the team played better than in previous games but the ultimate had to be reaching the final of the tournament. He asked Ghanaians to be grateful to God that the Stars at least got to the semi-final of the tournament and did not crash out earlier as some other giants on the African tournament.
Speaking about the performance of the players in the game, he particularly mentioned Asamoah Gyan as a player who did not play particularly well during the course of the game. He said Gyan did not have to take the penalty kick since his performance throughout the tournament had not been an impressive one.
He asked that the team be psyched up for their last game on Saturday, February 2 against Mali since entering the game with a troubled mindset might cost the Stars the third place. Mr. Pobee mentioned the Ivory Coast as the clear favourites to annex the AFCON trophy considering their performance in the tourney so far.
Ghana lost to the Chipolopolo of Zambia in the semi-final of the on-going AFCON courtesy of a 78th minute strike by substitute Emmanuel Mayuka.
