Unforgetable happenings of the year 2011

The year 2011 was filled with so many interesting events and controversies as well. From weddings to divorces to pregnancies and babies to accidents and deaths, to lawsuits and so many others. As much as these are all part of life, those of celebrities, both local and foreign lies in the public interest the most.

Starting with weddings; on the local scene, the biggest and most controversial marriage was that between Nigerian star actress, Mercy Johnson to Prince Odi, Chinedu Ikedieze and Nneoma also tied the knot to the surprise of many and Ivorian footballer Didier Drogba also got married.

On the contrary, Ghanaian actress Lucky Lawson rumoured divorce as well as Nigerian actresses, Kate Henshaw Nutal and Chika Ike. Rather on a pathetic note, Uche Jumbo was dumped by her boyfriend.

Still on the local font, Mzbel was arrested for traffic offences, whilst Nigerian actor, Jim Iyke was and still is being charged for fraud.

A lot of people were taken aback when lord Kenya announced his born again status. He has since launched his maiden gospel music album.

On the foreign front, the biggest most talked about and publicised marriage in many years was the royal wedding between Kate Middleton and Prince William, the Duchess and Duke of Cambridge respectively.

Kim Kardashian also got married to Kris Humphries and already, they are on the path to getting a divorce. It’s actually one of the shortest lived marriages this year.

Toy boy, Ashton Kutcher and Demi, who have been married for six years also plan of getting divorced. Tina Knowles and Mathew Knowles, parents of Beyonce also got divorced last year. Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, Mel Gibson and Robyn, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mariah Shriver are some other celebrity couples who got divorce during the year in review.

Away from break ups and make ups, Beyonce got pregnant this year and she is still expecting the baby. Meanwhile wife of Ghana’s “rap doctor”, Okyeame Kwame, Anika, wife of Okyeame Kofi, Stacy,  Jessica Hudson, Victoria Becham and Mariah Carrey all delivered bouncing babies during 2011.

Chinua Achebe, author of Things Fall Apart, had a legal battle with American rapper, 50 Cent for using his registered book title. Dr Murray, doctor of the late Pop King, Michael Jackson was also sentenced to 4 years in jail for manslaughter.

T.I and DMX were released from prison last year but Ja Rule and Wesley snipes are still serving their jail term.

A sad but rather unavoidable phase of the entertainment scene was when Geraldine, Efo Kojo Mawugbe, Sam Efe Loco, Ashley Nwosu passed away. Enebeli and Porter Bruno missed death as they have been struck down by stroke and are still recovering.

In spite of the controversies which characterised the year 2011, 2012 seems promising and to our celebrities home and abroad, we pray they embrace the year with hope.
